A Task to be Completed

For many years much of the church in America has taught that Christianity is a personal relationship. That teaching is biblical, God does deal with his people personally, but it also can lead to each of us developing an “I’m the center of the universe” perspective as we seek to follow Christ in our lives.  When Jesus’ disciples were concerned with their next meal (John 4:31-38), he told them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.… Look I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are ripe white for harvest.”   In Matthew 28:18-19, in some of his last words before ascending to take his place alongside the Father, Jesus commissioned his disciples, (and we are his disciples aren’t we?), “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.  And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Christ told us to go to every people group on earth and plant his church among them.  Jesus is building his Church, workers continue to go forth to tell his gospel, and disciple new believers, but the mission is not yet complete.  There remain hundreds of people groups on earth with no known access to the gospel.   There is much more work to be done.  Where do we fit in?

We can serve by going to an unreached people group.  We can serve by befriending and sharing the gospel with international students and workers among us. We can serve by reaching out to refugees from unreached people groups in places like Clarkston, Georgia. We can serve by helping to mobilize his people to become involved in working to complete the mission.  We can serve by supporting those who go materially and spiritually through giving and praying.

We don’t know when this mission will be completed, but we know that it will be.  God’s word tells us, “this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”  Christ is working now to build his kingdom.  Let’s join him.
